Europe is extremely rich in festivals and holidays. With so many cultures to show off — and so many centuries of practice — Europe is a pro at partying.
Oktoberfest – Munich, Gemany
Oktoberfest runs for 3 weekends and always ends the first Sunday of October. Beer, after all, is more than a drink for the residents of Munich, it’s a way of life, and integrated into the cultural fabric of the city. It’s the most genteel German frat party you could imagine.
San Fermín - Navarra, Spain
The festival of San Fermín in the city of Pamplona is a deeply rooted celebration held annually from 12:00, 6 July, when the opening of the party is marked by setting off the pyrotechnic chupinazo, to midnight 14 July, with the singing of the Pobre de Mí. San Fermin, more commonly known as 'the Running of the Bulls'.
La Tomatina – Spain
La Tomatina is a food fight festival held on the last Wednesday of August each year in the town of Bunol near to Valencia in Spain. Throwing tomatoes at strangers is a fun way to work out pent up aggression, with over 130,000 kilos of juicy tomatoes, and 30,000 revelers go medieval.
Ultra Europe - Split, Croatia
Ultra Europe is the European edition of the Ultra Music Festival taking place in Croatia. Another massive european festival, set across 3 days with a variety of electronic music from house through to techno and hard dance. Beach parties, boat parties and pretty much endless music from the moment the festival begins.
Batalla del Vino - Haro, La Rioja, Spain
Batalla del Vino is a festival in the town of Haro in the La Rioja region of northern Spain. It is held every year in the summer and involves wine drinking competitions and contests and a Batalla de Vino (Battle of Wine) where wines are poured at each other from buckets. The wine fight starts the night before, on the evening of the 28th.
Transylvanian Halloween Trek - Hungary & Romania
Transylvania. The name itself is enough to send an icy chill down the spine of even the most fearless adventurer. The Halloween Party is without a doubt one of the most remarkable events anyone could experience in Transylvania.
King’s Day - Amsterdam, Holland
On King’s Day more craziness than usual descends upon the beautiful city of Amsterdam. King’s Day is the biggest national event in Holland. Everything and everyone turns orange and celebrates on King’s Day. You will find music shows, fairs, flea markets and parties throughout the country.
Up Helly Aa - Lerwick, Shetland Islands
Up Helly Aa refers to any of a variety of fire festivals held in Shetland, in Scotland, annually in the middle of winter to mark the end of the yule season. Up Helly Aa is a lot more than a sub-arctic bonfire and booze-up. It's a superb spectacle, a celebration of Shetland history, and a triumphant demonstration of the islanders' skills and spirit.
